Parent Visa Australia: Clear Steps for Reuniting with Family

Families across Australia are asking a simple question:
how can parents join us here, legally and for the long term? The answer sits across a few visa pathways — each with different timelines, costs, and rules. This guide breaks down the options for a parent visa Australia, plus practical tips for a smoother move.

The main pathways at a glance

Permanent options

  • Parent (subclass 103) — permanent residence; subject to capping and queueing.
  • Contributory Parent (subclass 143) / Contributory Parent (Temporary) 173 — faster finalisation than 103 historically, with higher government charges; permanent pathway via 143.
  • Aged variants (804, 864, 884) — for parents who meet the “aged” requirement.

Temporary option

  • Sponsored Parent (Temporary) 870 — stay for 3 or 5 years at a time, with a cumulative maximum of 10 years across visas. This visa is for long visits and does not itself grant permanent residence.

Eligibility cornerstone: the Balance of Family Test

Most permanent Parent visas require the Balance of Family Test. In short, a parent passes if at least half of the children are “eligible” (Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible NZ citizens usually resident in Australia) or if more children live in Australia than in any other single country. The test can’t be waived

Processing reality in 2025

Parent places are capped each program year, and all Parent visa Australia are queued. As at 31 May 2025, Home Affairs indicated:

  • Contributory Parent (143): applications queued up to April 2018 released for final processing; estimated timeframe for new applications ~14 years.
  • Parent (103)/Aged Parent (804): queued up to Dec 2012/Jan 2013; estimated timeframe for new applications ~31 years.

These dates change over time; always check the latest queue release page.

Can parents visit while waiting?

Yes — many families seek a Visitor visa (subclass 600) so parents can spend time in Australia during the long wait. For some streams, stays of up to 12 months may be granted depending on circumstances and visa conditions. Decisions are case-by-case, and total time limits apply.

Sponsored Parent (Temporary) 870: who it suits

  • Ideal for families wanting extended visits without a permanent outcome right away.
  • Stay 3 or 5 years per grant; you can apply again up to 10 years total stay (COVID extensions that added 18 months didn’t count toward this cap).
  • Requires an approved Parent Sponsor, private health insurance, and meeting a household income threshold set by the Department.

Assurance of Support (AoS): when it’s required

For many permanent Parent visas, sponsors or assurers must lodge an Assurance of Support (a legal commitment and bond) with Services Australia. The AoS period varies by visa type and can run 1, 2, 4 or 10 years. Check current AoS rules, evidence, and income testing before you plan finances.

Choosing a path: quick comparison

Goal

Likely Path

Key points

Permanent reunion

143/173 → 143 or 103/804

BoF test applies; AoS typically required; long queues; large government charges for contributory route.

Extended visits

870

3 or 5 years per grant; up to 10 years total; health insurance and sponsor income threshold apply; temporary only.

Short family visits

600 (Tourist/Sponsored Family)

Stays vary by stream; some allow up to 12 months where justified; genuine visitor intent is essential.

Smart prep before you apply

  • Audit the family tree early for the Balance of Family calculation (include step- and adopted children correctly).
  • Plan funding for AoS if pursuing permanent Parent visas; check deposit/bond rules and income tests with Services Australia.
  • Choose the right visit strategy while waiting: onshore vs offshore Tourist streams have different stay rules and conditions.
  • Track queue updates — the official page publishes current release dates and estimated timeframes.

Getting help

Policies shift, queue dates move, and the Balance of Family Test can be tricky in blended families. Many readers work with australian immigration agents in melbourne for case reviews, document prep, and a strategy that fits long-term plans.

Final word

A parent visa Australia plan works best when timelines, budget, and eligibility are mapped upfront. Start with the official requirements, confirm queue realities, and choose the path that matches your family’s goals.
